Have 'dealer buttons' available, one per table. You can buy actual dealer buttons, or just use something distinctive. These are used to keep track of the 'dealer'—which is important even if you use a single dealer at each table (check the rules of Texas Hold 'Em for more information). Hand Ranking

While most hand rankings are easy enough to understand, others require an explanation. This chart will explain exactly what beats what. These hand rankings are the same for all high hand poker games. A flush will beat a straight no matter if you are playing Holdem, Omaha, etc. Click to download this cheat sheet as .pdf.

Position

Position in poker is one of the most important considerations in any game. It can sometimes be more important than your actual hand strength. The following chart below shows each seat at a poker table and what position each seat belongs to.

Keep in mind to adjust these seats based on how many people are at your table. See example hands played out on video for every game type in our how to play card games section.

Starting Hands

The most important decision a player can make is if they should get involved in the hand at all.

Many times new players can get trapped into playing hands that seem 'close enough' to a good hand. It can be hard to draw the line between A♥J♠ and A♥T♠, especially when you are not catching good cards.

A♥T♠ for example lies just outside the top 10% of starting hands (shown right, in blue) yet is still a strong hand in late position.

It's difficult to draw up an exact cheat sheet for starting hands as it depends on your playing style. Learn more in this How to Play Texas Holdem article.

Drawing odds

When playing for a flush draw or a straight draw the key is making sure you are getting the right odds to draw. How often will that straight draw come in? How likely are you to turn your set into a full house? This chart will show you all the odds based on how many 'outs' when on the flop and then on the turn.

Casino nights are a favorite of corporate functions, and now you can host a DIY night at home by following my tips and tricks. Gambling fulfils our natural play instinct, and when you are betting with someone else’s money casino games are, well…. a sure bet.

To get things rolling (pun intended!) select a casino themed invitation to get the word out. When guests arrive give a brief run down on how the night will unroll, then let the games begin.

The Games

Blackjack, poker, craps, slots, and roulette are the most popular casino games. Choose one or two to play at your party. With blackjack and poker only requiring a deck of cards to play, these are the simplest choices. Give yourself a refresher on blackjack rules, Texas Hold’em rules, and poker rules before the night kicks off.

Friendly betting adds a layer of interest to the night. Provide your guests with poker chips upon arrival, and watch them let loose with someone else’s money. Play for bragging rights, or organize prizes or a trophy. I like to make the ‘ante’ a $10 gift which I then give away over the course of the evening… first to loose all chips, most dapper, cutest couple, whatever takes your fancy.

The Food

In keeping with the Vegas theme, an all-you-can-eat buffet would fit in well, and is easily achieved if everyone brings a plate. As a savvy diy hostess I know food prep is part of the fun, and a quick search on Pinterest brings up lots of cute finger food in a casino theme. Think red and black... strawberries and blackberries, cherry tomatoes, red bell pepper, red and black gumballs, gummy cherries, and hot tamales. These jellybean roulette cups and brownie dice will satisfy anyone with a sweet tooth.

The Decor

Choose a themed night, like Monte Carlo, Vegas, or Casino Royale, or simply anything black, white, red, or glitzy are good choices. Dice and card props are easy to come across. Oriental Trading Company has tableware, favors, and decorations in a casino theme. To give your guests a break from the casino games a photobooth with a sparkly backdrop would be a fun addition. Provide props that allow people to dress up as a royal flush. The dice and candle table center below looks fabulous, and would be quick and easy to throw together.

Don’t forget the most important accessories, tables and comfy chairs!

The Outcome

You can make the night as friendly or competitive as you like, and have the games last the entire night, or just run them for a portion of the night. If you want to encourage mingling offer a break from the games, such as a buffet table.
